Report of Establishment Ceremony of the Hong Kong Institute of Civil and Building Information Management held on 22 September, 2017
To mark its official establishment, the Hong Kong Institute of Civil and Building Information Management (HKICBIM) held an establishment ceremony at Charles K. Kao Auditorium, Hong Kong Science Park, on 22 September 2017, under the auspices of the Founding President, Sr. Wong Kin, Michael.
In his opening speech, Michael addressed the current development of Building Information Modelling（BIM）and shared his vision of the BIM application in future. ‘Besides reducing the amendments in the construction process and lowering project costs, BIM could raise the safety level of the projects by simulating construction steps to spot potential danger.’ said Michael.
By establishing Hong Kong’s first Civil BIM institute, HKICBIM, Michael hoped to bring stakeholders together sharing BIM expertise in a single platform, and creating common language. ‘Now, the industry is lack of common language which leads to problems when using BIM.’ he said. ‘We earlier began to collect opinions from professionals in different fields to help establishing Level of Details（LOD）.’ He added that HKICBIM is building an online database of high quality BIM objects, which provides free access for registered members, expected to be released at the end of this year.
Following Michael’s speech, Sr. Li Ho Fai, Clayton, committee member of HKICBIM, made a speech to highlight the relationship between Civil BIM and smart city. By demonstrating with the 3D reality model of the Hong Kong Science Park, he explained the Civil BIM could record and show the entire city with accurate 3D coordinates, then add other technologies on top, to form the basis of a smart city.
Next in the sharing session, the Honorary Treasurer, Mr Liu Chun Kit, and committee member Sr. Yip Hon Wah, Frankie, have talked about their experience in applying BIM in civil construction which used a geo-referenced BIM to spot and resolve problems. ‘We could achieve very detailed assembly procedure with the help of BIM.’ said Liu. ‘It is not only animation, but a simulation of construction lifting in reality. An accurate BIM could even predict whether the lifting process could lead to collision and evaluate potential risk to raise the safety level.’
After the ceremony speeches, Founding President, Sr. Wong Kin, Michael, and Vice President, Ir. Au Shiu Kin, David, presented souvenir gifts to all the guest of honors, including Dr. Maggie Mai (Robotics Platform, Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks), Mr. Vincent Hou (Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute), Mr. Freddie Ho (Bentley Systems), Ms. Annie Wong (Leica Geosystems), and Mr. Steve Chan (Chain Technology Development).
